A little background...
As many of you know, I am an
elementary school teacher at Sacaton Elementary School on the
Gila River Indian Reservation. Back in 2008 I decided to start
an afterschool hiking and camping club for the 5th grade
students with a year-end hike to Havasupai Falls. On that trip
we had 11 students and 3 adults on that trip and a good time was
had by all.
Last year we had
our second trip and, while it wasn't without its challenges, 15-
4th graders and 6 adults once again made the hike to the falls.
We paid for last year's trip by holding fundraisers, including a
charity poker tournament (see
website) and a spaghetti dinner at school. Both fundraisers
did our club well and we were able to purchase much needed
supplies for our trip.
This year,
however, we need to raise a few more bucks than last year. Right
now I have 30 students signed up to make the trip! We held our
first meeting during the first week of November and the students
were working on some mailings to area businesses, as well as
learning how to put up our tents. It was clear that this was
their first time doing such a thing and they had fun doing it.
The cost of our
trip is going to be in the neighborhood of $7,500 and to help
raise the funds we are going to have a golf tournament on March
3rd out in Queen Creek at
The Links. Below are some of the details about the

Let me tell you about our
friends at Mountain House. Ever since I started the Hiking and
Camping Club at Sacaton Elementary School, they've done more
than their fair share of helping out the kids. This is now the
third consecutive year that Mountain House has generously
donated to our club. I can't thank them enough for the
continuing support we receive from them year after year. You
guys rock!

The Sweet and Sour Pork is
definitely our favorite!
